Closure of McCain’s Hastings vegetable processing business
24 March 2026
This announcement is a further blow to the New Zealand process vegetable industry.
Imports of canned and frozen vegetables are killing the New Zealand industry.
This closure will affect more than 100 growers (21% of the process vegetable sector) in the Hawke’s Bay, and will cost the industry $18 million in lost returns annually.
Bean, carrot, pea and sweetcorn process vegetable growers are affected.
New Zealanders must try and support the local industry by buying New Zealand grown and processed vegetables. Please check the labels on canned and frozen vegetables in the supermarkets.
New Zealand grown and processed vegetables also taste the best and are grown to exacting standards.
